Ready to Set a Few Goals? 8 Simple Steps

spiral-bound-notebook-1-538127-mReady to set a few goals?  Me too!  It takes me awhile to turn the corner into fall but by mid September I’m usually ready to pull out a legal pad and start listing a few items that really could get done between now and Christmas.

Life Coaches like myself and others offer a plan to shape this process called “10 Goals in 90 Days.”  Maybe because I am so concrete but I find this is a highly effective way to maximize the energy burst I usually feel in the fall.

Here’s how it works:

  1. Set aside a chunk of time like at least an hour when you won’t be interrupted.
  2. Write down all the ideas that come to mind about what you would like to accomplish in the next 90 days.
  3. Pick out a few that are easy and might take just a short time like cleaning out your dresser drawers and a couple that are more time-consuming like rewriting your resume, organize your basement, etc.
  4. Choose up to 10 (less is fine) that seem most do-able and rewarding that you can realistically finish by the week before Christmas.
  5. Make sure they are very specific i.e. S.M.A.R.T. goals (Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Realistic, Time-bound) “Walk More and Eat Less” do not qualify as specific!
  6. Pull out your calendar and set aside time for your plan.
  7. VERY IMPORTANT:  Decide which form of accountability will be the most effective for you.  If the list stays on your desk pile or in your purse nothing will happen.
  8. Enlist a friend, your small group or a Life Coach to check-in with on how you’re doing.  Review your list often.
