Paradise (in Wisconsin) Revisited

Home Sweet HomeWe received a very rare gift from our children, a chance to experience all over again a few of our favorite days…

The Back Story:  1975 – Tom and I were looking for a place to escape for the weekend and ended up staying in a cozy fishing cottage in Green Lake, WI.   Never one to do something fun just once, we returned the next couple of Octobers until the kids started coming.

Coming up for air in 1985, we packed them all (and sometimes the dog) in the van and went back to the same place in October, and again, and again until the oldest went to college.  Each weekend followed the same simple script…walk on the dock, play on the swings, throw a football, compete with each other in racing sticks tossed in the river, take a walk with flashlights after dinner, put together a jigsaw puzzle, drink cocoa, eat granola with cider.

And then those getaways were over.  We were on to Parent’s Weekends now.  Oh sure, we talked about going back when everyone was all grown up but no one had mentioned it for a long time.

Fast Forward to the Present… August 18th, our 40th anniversary, we open what we thought was an anniversary card but it was an invitation from all our children and their spouses and their children…to go back for the first time in 18 years. Revisit the same fishing cottage (and a few more!) in the same town and follow the script again.

So we did…last weekend. Every aspect was intentionally replicated for our family of now 12 aging from 3 to 63 including the flashlight walk after dark.  The last piece of the very same puzzle dropped in place right before time to leave.

For once, words fail me to describe our most magnificent time but it involved a lot of experiencing the  joy through my happy tears!  I will be wrapping up in the soft quilt of those memories for the rest of my life.

As parents, we tried a LOT of things over the past 35 years of life with kids.  Trust me, many were duds.  Hard to know at the time that this simple autumn trip would become became a winner and because it did we all won the grand-prize.
