The Intentional Birthday: 8 Ways to Celebrate

happy-birthday-599394-mHappy Birthday to You whenever it is! I hope you take the time to stop and celebrate your precious life and give thanks that you get to start another year full of possibilities. I know there are some people who “don’t like to make a big deal about birthdays” but you ARE a big deal to God and those who love you so step into the fullness of all the joy a birthday can hold.

From my (many) years of celebrating and asking friends about how they design their birthdays, here are 8 ways to create an Intentional Birthday.

  1. Choose how you want to celebrate, don’t expect your family or friends to come up with the perfect plan. Want to go out to dinner, have a party, eat cake for breakfast? Make it happen. Invite others to join you if you want company!
  2. Carpe Diem! If you can take off work, great! Get up early and stay up late to enjoy all the moments. It is a long time before your birthday comes around again.
  3. Write a prayer of thanks to God for bringing you into life and placing you here and now. Thanking your Mom is also nice too J
  4. Take some time to reflect on the events of this past year of your life and record the highlights in a birthday journal. I also like to list books I have read, new friends I have met and experiences that shaped me.
  5. Spend a bit of time doing something life-giving like a walk on the beach, looking at old photos, paging through a favorite book, watching the sunrise.
  6. Try something new like setting up GoodReads, uploading photos, experimenting with a new eyeliner, ordering something exotic for lunch.
  7. Take advantage of fr*e birthday offers from local restaurants by signing up in advance on their websites. I have several dinner coupons to use as well as a gift from Starbucks. Fr*e birthday deals
  8. Treat your body well as it is also entering into another year 🙂 Massage, facial, manicure/pedicure are nice rewards. Wearing your favorite clothes all day long is nice too.

What did I miss? Let me know how you celebrate!
