The 500 Month Mark

Around 150 Months

When I called a local fine dining establishment for a reservation she asked if we were celebrating a special occasion. “Why yes…” I replied, “We have been married 500 months.” Perhaps no one had ever mentioned celebrating that occasion before but sure enough when she led us to our very private table, there were anniversary garnishes and sparkles and bonus glasses of wine and congratulations all around.

It takes a long time to get to 500 months. 41 years, 8 months. Eight presidents from Ford to Obama. Bell-bottoms have come/gone/come/gone. Gas seemed outrageous at the time at 55.9. Our fathers died, our grandchildren were born. Friends joined our circle or moved away. We moved only a couple of times and early on helped form the church we are still in. We changed jobs, went to school, finished school and then went back. Some things have stayed the same.

Our Celebration Table

A million conversations have taken place between the two of us but on Saturday evening as we sat in our dress-up outfits, we chose to answer a few questions to see what else we might learn about each other. I highly recommend the exercise. Yup, there is always more to learn and love about a lifelong partner.

Almost four hours after we sat down at the restaurant, we walked out and came home to watch our 40th anniversary video and then watched it again. A very good celebration.

We won’t make another 500 months this side of heaven but I’m counting on many more milestones. I encourage you to do the same. Life is sweet with rhythms of celebration.

“There is no more lovely, friendly, and charming relationship, communion or company that a good marriage.” Martin Luther

That 150 Month photo was taken at our wedding. So it was a Double-date! So grateful for the two of you in our lives over 28 years ago!
